“The history of philosophy has always been the agent of power in philosophy, and even in thought. It has played the repressor’s role: how can you think without having read Plato, Descartes, Kant and Heidegger and so-and-so’s book on them? A formidable school of intimidation which manufactures specialists in thought—but which makes those who stay outside conform all the more to this specialism which they despise. An image of thought called philosophy has been formed historically and it stops people from thinking.”

“When people believe that life has no purpose and is the result of random chance, guided by no greater force or principle, who can be surprised when that sense of meaninglessness is reflected in their art?”

James Brown is directly or indirectly responsible for the creation of about 6 different genres of music but I’ve got to hear about the fucking Beatles everyday.

Herman Wallace, a Black Panther Party member, is out of prison; it’s hard, because he has days to live, as he’s been suffering from liver cancer. But even after 40 years in solitary confinement, Wallace beat Louisiana. He won’t die in their fucking prison, and I think that is worth celebrating.

A vertical forest is expected to be completed this year in Milan. There are two tower apartment complexes which contain a total of 400 residential units. The facade of the buildings will be covered with 730 trees, 5,000 shrubs, and 11,000 perennial plants. It is expected to have the same ecological impact as 10,000 square meters of forest.
Aside from fighting smog and producing oxygen, the foliage is expected to provide insulation to the residential units.

People interested in their internet communications privacy might this find interesting. Glenn Greenwald was on reddit yesterday discussing the recent Edward Snowden-leaked disclosure that computer chipsets, including communications related chipsets, have NSA “backdoors”. There are electrical engineers and the like speculating on which ones, including freestanding VPN chips, have been compromised… by brand name. I’m seeing these ‘privacy appliances’ and subscriptions to the ‘services’ that go along with them advertised dirt cheap in the papers and internet. You MIGHT want to tell all your friends looking for this type of device these boxes are most likely compromised by the NSA.

A certain type of Bower Bird builds a nest from its own blue plumage. Yet when, for one reason or another, it does not have blue plumage the Bower Bird scavenges for “blue things” in its environment to “stand in” for the missing plumage.
This is perhaps one of the best illustrations of the birth of art.
